" Byfield’s career hasn’t played out exactly like anyone had drawn it up. But he was also one of the youngest players in his draft class, the pandemic necessitated time in the AHL, and then he suffered a fluke injury. And there just isn’t a young player in the sport quite like him through it all. So I’m still not that concerned, frankly, about his ceiling as a top-of-the-lineup pivot. He’s too good a skater and too big and strong and talented for his size not to put it all together. I have minor concerns about his processing and some of the bobbles that happen in his game when pace is ramped up, but there aren’t many 6-foot-4, 220-pound players who can skate and make plays like he can. Byfield’s blend of athleticism, speed, power, and finesse is just so rare. Are there kinks to his game that still need unwinding? Sure. He can get lost in no man’s land defensively a little. He has been a work in progress in the faceoff circle. But there are also so many things that distinguish him. His ability to play at full speed offensively, provide defensive and puck retrieval value on the forecheck, and generally push pace on the inside of the ice, is pretty special. He’ll surprise you with his creativity for his size, too. His wrist shot is dangerous from mid-range when he has the time to get it off (though I think he’ll need to continue to improve on balancing his catch-and-release to get the most out of himself as a shooter in traffic when he’s playing off the puck). The payoff is still there, it’s just going to require a little more patience (as hard as that can be with a second No. 2 pick, it’s just as important if not more). "

2- Alexander Holtz

" My indecision about where the Devils pool would rank from 4-9 was nothing compared to my indecision about whether to rank Holtz or Hughes first here. I think there’s this belief among readers that the gap between one player and the next are firm (or ought) to be. You probably expect more from me than throwing my hands up and saying “I don’t know.” But sometimes that’s just where you settle. The reality is that I think there are real cases for both kids at No. 1.

Holtz has the makings of a potential first-line winger (and should be a top-six one at minimum). He’s got a coveted blend of skill, power and shooting which allows him to create his own looks and then finish off of them with a variety of release points and shot types (or play off of the puck from a playmaker and get open with his timing). He’s got a pro frame and strength (6-foot, 195 pounds) which allows him to play through bumps, win battles, and get off the wall. But he’s also got underrated playmaking sense (I’ve often argued that his ability as a shooter is overstated and his ability in facilitation has been understated). He still needs to get a little quicker and play a little quicker to maximize those tools but if he can develop a little more pace (he’s not slow!), he’ll be the goal-scoring winger everyone believes he can be at even strength and he’s always going to have power-play upside. After an at-times bumpy post-draft season, he has really begun to figure out how to make his game work in North America in the AHL this season. His small-area skill has improved. He’s looking to hang onto the puck and attack more, and is getting to his spots with relative ease in the AHL. He also only just turned 20 a couple of weeks ago. He still needs to work on his one-timer, which he doesn’t always get the most of, but his wrist shot release and power are both high-end. He’s got soft touch off of his forehand and backhand, and he’s a dual-threat inside the offensive zone. "

" After winning a Clarkson Cup and the USHL’s forward of the year award (after he led the league in goals and five-on-five goal differential), Coronato has stepped right in at Harvard to become an impactful NCAA forward. He’s not the guy there, like some other players selected as high as he was tend to become with their college programs, but that’s not how Harvard typically operates anyways and the Crimson have two Olympians in Nick Abruzzese (Maple Leafs) and Sean Farrell (Canadiens). I’m actually very much looking forward to watching how Coronato handles the increased responsibility he’ll have as a go-to guy while his team’s two leading scorers are in Beijing. There’s has never been any questioning Coronato’s effort level or his ability to make something happen in the home plate area. He’s a determined, competitive player with the small-area skill package, detail and skating (he’s got good speed, for sure) needed to play that kind of game. He’s also got rare spatial awareness which helps him understand where he is in relation to pressure and play off of it. And then he’s got a hard, quick release which rattles off of the heel of his blade and great feel around the net. There’s a belief among many scouts and folks around the USHL and NCAA that even if he doesn’t become a dynamic, top-of-the-lineup guy, that his floor bottoms out as a diligent, hard-working middle-six scorer. That’s a darn good player. I think he’s got a chance to be more than that, too.

Former Chicago Steel teammate Ryan Ufko sums up the crux of Coronato’s game pretty plainly though: “His work ethic is out of this world.” "

" I was low on Gaudreau ahead of the draft and while I’ve come up on him a tad, I think the consensus has dropped on him more. He was drafted as high as he was (the fourth of 21 goalies drafted in the 2021 class) on the back of a stellar performance at U18 tournament and his reputation out of minor hockey following a draft year where the OHL never played. He’s a quick, athletic, competitive 6-foot-2 goalie whose movement in the net impresses. But I also think he hunches in his stance a little, he’s got continued work to do to control that movement better, and he can get frozen. This year has been a decent year for him behind a mediocre Sarnia team though. "

" Heinola’s got a strong foundation of quiet skills that have increasingly begun to get louder and louder. He reads and defends odd-man rushes extremely well, timing his slides and closes perfectly. He has always played a patient and poised two-way game built on efficiency rather than flair. He’s got four-way mobility which helps him escape pressure within his own zone and break teams down inside the offensive zone. He has always had a “heads-up” confidence. And he has, in the last two seasons, really begun to use those tools in a more ambitious, attacking style to really look to dictate play more (while still taking what’s given). He’s more aggressive and intentional carrying the puck deep into the offensive zone more, activating with his feet instead of an outlet more, or looking to spin off checks or create through tight seams with some ingenuity. I’m confident that Heinola could be effective on the Jets’ third pairing tomorrow and my belief in him as a top-four guy in the medium term remains unwavering. "

6- Cam York

Repêché 12ie au total en 2019 par Detroit.

" Here’s the thing about Cam York: He just turned 21 at the beginning of the month and he has yet to play a full season’s worth of pro hockey games. This time last year, he was a month removed from captaining Team USA to gold at the world juniors and just a few games into his sophomore season in college. There are, though, divergent opinions on his upside among scouts. Everyone agrees he’s a good young player and kid who does a lot well. He has also developed out his 5-foot-11 frame in the last couple of years. But there are concerns about his ability to really dictate and determine outcomes on the ice at the NHL level in ways he did at lower levels. He’s a smooth skater but not an explosive one. And while he’s talented with the puck on his stick, capable of running a power play, mobile moving side-to-side across the line and a superb passer who has produced at every level he’s ever played at, some worry that he’s not quite dynamic enough to become a truly high-end offensive defenseman, nor big enough and powerful enough to become go-to defensive zone guy. And while I share in some of those concerns, I also still see an excellent distributor who makes the game look easy, rotating in and out of space with and without the puck to make plays and get open. I see a light, fluid stride and smooth hands which help him manipulate opposing players, create separation without a separation gear and manage pressure to play with a ton of poise with the puck. I see a positional defender who does a good enough job gapping up and maintaining his gaps to help break up plays and transition back the other way without needing to push people around. And while I have softened a little on how high I once was on him, I still see a potential second-pairing future as an effective but offensively inclined three-zone player who can play a regular shift at even strength and contribute on the power play (even if that settles in as more of a PP2 than true PP1 guy). "

" It has been a tale of two seasons for Ceulemans. I was a little worried about him out of the gate in September and October when some of the concerns I had about him in his draft year were pushed to the forefront as he made the adjustment to college. He can make his fair share of mistakes, turn pucks over, and get caught flatfooted and burned when he’s not ramped up and dialled in. But he has been tremendous since early November, playing the commanding style that his raw tools allow him to when he’s at his best. There’s a ton to like about Ceulemans’ package. He’s right-handed. He’s big (6-foot-2 and compact 200 or so pounds), and sturdy, and athletic and he uses his heaviness to play a rugged and physical style against the rush and in his own zone along the wall (though he can sometimes settle into a lackadaisical defensive posture and get caught puck-watching). He’s also capable of really imposing himself offensively, with an attacking style which is complemented by a hard point shot (off of his snapshot and his low slap shot) and quick offensive-zone instincts through holes as they open. When he plays within himself while remaining aggressive, he looks like a professional defenceman already and the kind of players teams crave in their top-four. I like him best when he’s really active, looking to engage and play decisively on both sides of the puck. He’s not going to make the long play past or through several layers of pressure but when he plays to beat the first layer and then make his play, he’s a dominant three-zone player. "

" Koivunen’s a highly-entertaining, highly-gifted winger who is having an excellent age-adjusted season (especially considering his June birthday) in Liiga as one of Karpat’s top scorers in his rookie season at the level (and one was piece of Finland’s best line through two games at the world juniors before the tournament was shut down). He’s a delight to watch with the puck on his stick. He’s a crafty problem-solver whose game tilts towards offence (he’s got work to do to become a more reliable player defensively). He can manufacture offence in a lot of ways off of the perimeter, whether that’s playing pucks into space with the perfect weight or baiting defenders into reaches so that he can cut past them. He’s one of those kids who can just carve the offensive zone up as a dual-threat scorer and passer. I’ve also liked him more and more on the cycle this season, which is a nice step forward for a young player who already excels in open ice. He has also had a bit of a growth spurt (he was listed at 5-foot-11 and 161 pounds in his draft year and he’s 6-foot and 172 pounds). I see top-six upside with the right development plan and some patience. "

" After transforming his already-unique game over the course of his QMJHL career, Abramov closed it out with a league title as Victoriaville’s captain. It took him some time to get comfortable in the AHL (after he finished second in Traverse City in scoring with six points in four games, looked good offensively and defensively stripping and hanging onto pucks) as a rookie this season but after posting just five points in his first 18 games, he has registered 11 points in his last 10 games. Abramov has a great feel for the game and anticipation, tends to direct what happens on his line, has a sixth sense of where and how to play the puck into space, and changes speed effectively to play on his edges and flow up ice with a breezy, weaving, agile stride that allows him to side-step pressure. But while he has worked hard to add muscle to his once-wiry 6-foot frame and made progress in his willingness to attack into his shot and take the game into his own hands at the QMJHL level, he has faced old problems getting to the interior to establish himself his shot in the AHL. Whether or not he progresses in those two areas, as he builds confidence attacking the interior, will determine his ability to stay on pucks, stay unpredictable, get the most out of the rest of his skill and ultimately determine his outcomes. "

Repêché 67ie au total en 2021 par Los Angeles.

" I had Nause ranked 72nd when the Panthers drafted him 56th, so I was a touch lower on him than they (and many others I spoke to about him last year) were. And this season on a loaded Remparts team (where he is, it must be said, asked to do a lot defensively), he has frankly struggled in stretches as the only minus player on a team that has, as I write this, outscored the opposition by nearly 50 goals (and counting). Nause is an athletic, pro-framed defenceman with impressive balance, strong control of his forward and backward pushes, and an ability to quickly read what’s in front of him (which allows him to consistently hit teammates in stride with little bump plays or headmans). He’s also mobile moving across the line, aggressively crossing over or opening up to create lanes or pull opposing players away from his linemates. But there’s also some panic to his game when there isn’t a play that’s immediately available after he’s stepped past a first layer and he can struggle to identify other options and try to force something or throw the puck away. And while I think he’s capable of becoming a trustworthy defensive defenceman who has a good package of tools going the other way, his game without the puck still needs some tightening up (both defending the rush, where he can be a little lackadaisical) and within his own zone (where he can get caught puck-watching). He makes mistakes often enough that I’m still a little worried about how he’s going to process the game at higher tempos. And though he’s comfortable with the puck on his stick (particularly out wide to his body going side to side), he seems to bobble it a fair share when pucks end up in his feet. We’ll see. A little polish will go a long way with Nause. "

" I strongly debated ranking Zellweger as high as No. 2 here. That’s how impressive he has been in the last year and a half. He has become a bit of a marvel for his skating-transition package and the way it allows him to control play all over the ice (including, despite his 5-foot-9 frame, defensively). He’s a one-man exit-entry machine. He almost never puts himself into tough spots but when he does and he needs to track back, his skating helps him recover. Despite being the youngest defenceman to make Team Canada’s world junior team, I thought he was one of its most impressive players right through from the summer showcase and December selection camps in Calgary to the short-lived tournament in Edmonton. He uses his feet to buzz around the ice and carry pucks off the line or in transition better than just about any defenceman in the CHL. The way he hugs corners and rounds the net, or turns under opposing players, or spins off of pressure, is extremely impressive. But he also just always seems to play well. I love how quickly he reads the play when he gets the puck. It’s catch, survey, and quickly skate or outlet. Rinse, repeat. He almost never waits too long to make a decision. His wrister is showing improved pop with an early release off of his toe. He playing a feistier game this year and rises to the challenge in battles to keep sequences alive or skate them away from danger. He’s got a silky first touch, catching difficult passes mid-stride into a planned movement or a cross-ice pass. He’s just an effortless four-way skater who uses his feet to be in constant motion with and without the puck offensively, as well as to swallow up carriers in the neutral zone with tight gaps, virtually gluing himself to the hips of opposing players. He’s got the ability to play a highly-active roving style.

Here’s Everett coach Dennis Williams offering a bit of a different perspective on Zellweger from a recent conversation: “Olen’s a terrific young man. Obviously, his skill set and his play speaks for itself but his attention to detail, his character, and how he approaches each game is unbelievable. And I really think for him over the last 18 months, his play without the puck has really improved. We know he can get up the ice and join the rush and (has a) skill set offensively but he has continued to improve without the puck. He just wants to be on the ice all of the time and to me, he’s a great culture piece.” "

" This has been a bit of a transitional year for Kapanen as he tries to push beyond the junior level to establish himself in Liiga. The promise of Kapanen is in his two-way game but he’s got skill, I think his skating has really smoothed out this year, and I actually think he has tried too hard to be the responsible, no-mistake 200-foot player at times. And that’s a confidence issue more than anything. It’s being timid at a new level, which is quite common. Kapanen’s a highly-involved, decently-gifted creator who can execute difficult escapes under pressure, knifes through holes with his ability to burst across his outside edges, and always seems to be around the net to finish off plays (though he can score from the slot with a quick release off of either foot as well). There are times when I think he can oversimplify his game, but that tunnel-visioning normally happens while trying to make a play to the interior instead of drifting to the outside, so it’s a lot easier to live with. Add in a buzzing approach that keeps and he’s a very likeable player. Upside remains the question for Kapanen. Everyone fully expects him to become a well-rounded pro play. But can he show some of those tools (which are there!) enough to produce at a high enough level. "

" Daws has been solid in his first season in Utica (though it can be hard to evaluate goalies who play behind excellent teams). He relies on sharp angles and his 6-foot-4 frame to challenge shooters and play a blocking style that makes the first save and redirects rebounds out of danger. He can start to struggle when the play in front of him breaks down into scrambles or a ton of east-west movement, though, because he’s not a particularly athletic or agile goalie on changes of direction (though I would say his first push is stronger than his recoveries). He has always felt like he tops out as a backup, but he’s a well-liked goalie and there’s belief among those who know netminders better than I do that he’ll get there. "

" After ranking Thompson late on last year’s list on the back of his track record and not my familiarity with the player (I didn’t truthfully pay close attention to him in USports or the ECHL after his WHL days), I promised to do my homework on him for this year’s edition. And that’s exactly what I’ve done. The results of that research have impressed me, too. He was great in his first season in the AHL last year (all of which was played after the 2020 rankings were out) and that has continued this season as Henderson’s starting goalie. He’s a good-sized, technically sound goalie who plays his lines squarely, reads the play well, and can fall back on his athleticism and feet when he needs to. He’s 24, so that’s obviously a huge factor in slotting him in this exercise, but he looks like an NHL goalie today. He’s certainly a cut above Dylan Ferguson and Jiri Patera, even accounting for the age gap. "

" Evans, who turned 20 in December, is a stocky 6-foot defender who has been one of the better two-way defencemen in the WHL the last two years. Pats head coach John Paddock (and formerly Dave Struch) and his staff are big fans in Regina, using him in all situations and counting on him to lead their offence. With the puck, he plays a heady and active, sometimes-crafty game that relies on calculated risks to advance the puck up ice and then make plays inside the offensive zone. Defensively, he’s also always been a feisty, physically-engaged player who plays aggressive gaps effectively against top junior-level players. He’s not going to be a high-end guy at upper levels at either end I don’t think, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he becomes a useful fifth or sixth defenceman for the Kraken at some point — and it didn’t surprise me when they targeted a couple of overagers in their first draft to give the AHL club (which will be in Palm Desert when he turns pro next year) some immediate depth. " After surviving every top 19-year-old Swede’s transitional year to the SHL last season, Heineman’s shot generation and production have both improved this year despite his minutes (12 a night) staying the same. I honestly think he’s ready for a little more opportunity than Leksands have given him. I also think he’s often a little miscast as a hardworking, hard-shooting, shot-first guy who has a pro frame. He is all of those things and he’s got a pitchfork skating stride that still needs some work (he’s actually a good skater on his edges for my money) but beyond the hustle and the multi-dimensional shot (the hard wrister, the catch-and-release, and the one-touch power), he’s also got sneaky playmaking flair (which I’m confident will show up in the assist column when he gets more talented linemates) and good interior skill. He’s got some things to work on but I won’t be surprised if he works his way from bottom-six SHL scorer, to top-six SHL scorer, to top-six AHL scorer, to NHL option by the time he’s 22-23. "

" This is a bit of a wonky update on Ludvig because since the Feb. 2, 2021, release of last year’s Panthers ranking, he played all 13 of his first games in the AHL with Syracuse last season (which provided a new baseline of evaluation at the pro level) only to not have played a single game this season. Last season, he impressed, contributing at both ends of the ice right away without featuring prominently on the power play (the season after he was the second-most productive power-play quarterback in the WHL in terms of primary points). That early taste showed promise in the translatability of the 6-foot-1, 200-pound defenceman’s late-blooming game. Then, to begin this season, he was placed on non-roster IR in October with an undisclosed injury, removed from it and sent to the AHL in November, and still has yet to play there (with what I believe is a lower-body injury). Before the injury, Ludvig had developed into a powerful, athletic defender who played a physical, lean-on-you game built upon winning battles and rubbing players out in transition defensively, and using consistent decision-making and a hard shot to manage the game and finish plays offensively. It was nice, last season, to see some real smoothness in his game at the pro level. He was projecting as a No. 5-6 D. "

" After Harvard cancelled what should have been his sophomore season and he spent last year in the USHL, Thrun has picked up where he left off in his strong freshman campaign of two years ago. He’s the Crimson’s most productive defenceman now that Jack Rathbone (Canucks) and Reilly Walsh (Devils) have turned pro. Offensively, Thrun’s game is about puck movement and execution. His skill level isn’t dynamic but he’s a talented distributor who can move it quickly or patiently, remaining consistently efficient while semi-regularly surprising you with his creativity or a play through layers. After playing to tremendous results at both ends as a freshman, his game defensively has come under more stress and scrutiny in a more prominent role this season. But I’m a firm believer in his two-way value (which was his hallmark coming up). He has the size (6-foot-2, 195 pounds) and the mobility. He reliably defends the rush and man-to-man coverage, closing out effectively, keeping a disruptive stick, and anticipating attacking patterns effectively. I think he tracks and reads the play well (though he can occasionally lose his man in coverage or get caught puck watching). He’s a kid I was quite high on in his draft year and remain a big fan of for his consistency and his approach. I see No. 4-5 upside. "

He’s got decent skill for his size but developing out his frame, adding some muscle, and leveraging that size a little more effectively will determine whether he can take the steps he needs to go from depth Liiga player, to top Liiga player, to depth AHL player, to top AHL player, to NHL call-up option. He’s early enough in that path and has shown enough thus far to warrant continued attention along it. "

" Those who read my draft coverage last year will know that I never came around on Jordan, who became a bit of a public sphere player evaluator darling for his size-skating-transition package. I worried then (as I worry now) about his comfort level with the puck when things cave in on him. He’s not a particularly cerebral player and that, coupled with a lower-body injury that caused him to miss two-dozen games this season, has resulted in a bit of a slow developmental year. I understand the appeal. I’m not sure it’s going to produce the intended result. "
